Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived in a musical family on 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to singing superstar Dionne. When she was a little girl, Houston started singing professionally with the choir of her church. Houston sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khosns 1978 single Im Every Woman with her mother. She continued to offer back vocals to Jermaine Jackson, Lou Rawls and her own mother and worked briefly as models for the front cover of Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. Her singing with New York-based band Material brought attention to major record labels, including Arista. The label signed her to Arista in 1983 where she was a part of the company for the remainder of her career. Singles such as The Most Beautiful Love of All, How Can I Tell If You Give Good Love or the song Saving the Day and All My Love were all released from the album. These songs allowed Houston to reach the seven US top tens which were higher than even those of the Beatles. The album was sold to three million people in the first year as well as 25 million around the world. She won her first six Grammys. The Whitney album followed in 1987 and the singles How Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to build on the success of her debut album.
