Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born 9 August 1963, to the musically inclined family of Newark New Jersey is the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston and John Russell Houston Jr. Also, she is the sister of the singer Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney, she began singing in the church choir in the early years of her childhood. At the age 15 she joined her mom in the background vocals for Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. After that, she began to sing backing vocals with Lou Rawls and Jermaine and even her mother. The singer was first a featured performer for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her quality of vocal work earned her the attention of big record labels like Arista who signed her in 1983. The album she released as her debut Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and quickly became the top-selling album of a debut artist. Tracks like the title track, The Greatest Love of All, How Do I Know if You Give Good Love, and Saving the Day and All My Love were all released off the album. These songs helped Houston to achieve seven US top tens that surpassed even those of The Beatles. The album itself sold 3 million copies during its first year in the US and went on to make 25 million copies worldwide, earning it the very first one of six Grammies. The Whitney album released in 1987 that featured songs like that I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Where Do Broken Hearts Get to continue her popularity. It is The Bodyguard of 1992 that made her one of the top-selling performers in the history of music. Although her performance in the film as well as its soundtrack weren't appreciated however, her Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You as well as the accompanying album topped charts across the world for months. Their daughter Bobbi was born in March of 1993, the year after she wed Bobby Brown. In the same year the drug use was well-documented and she began using daily until 1996.
